12 Aug 2025 By Lily Pham
What Is Vietnam’s Visa Exemption Policy?
Vietnam offers visa exemption (visa-free entry) to citizens of certain countries for tourism and short visits. This means eligible travelers can enter Vietnam without applying for a visa, as long as they stay within the allowed timeframe.
Updated List of Visa-Exempt Countries (As of August 2025)
Vietnam now offers visa-free entry to 24 countries, including 12 newly added European nations, under Resolution 229/NQ-CP announced on August 11, 2025.

Important Notes
- The 45-day stay is counted from the date of entry into Vietnam, including both arrival and departure days.
- Your passport must be valid for at least 6 months from your date of arrival.
- No visa extension is allowed under visa exemption. If you wish to stay longer, apply for an e-visa in advance.
- You can re-enter Vietnam visa-free after your previous stay, but only after 30 days from your last exit date (unless entering with a valid visa or e-visa).
Who Still Needs a Visa?
- If your country is not on the exemption list, or you plan to stay more than 45 days, you’ll need to apply for one of the following:
- E-visa (30 days) – Available for over 80 nationalities
- Tourist visa (1–3 months) – Single or multiple entry
- Business or long-term visa – For extended stays or work purposes
Tips for Visa-Free Travelers
- Book a return or onward ticket to show proof of departure, if requested by immigration.
- Keep a copy of your hotel bookings and travel insurance (some airlines may ask before boarding).
- While visa-free, you still go through immigration check — make sure all information is clear and consistent.
Vietnam’s visa exemption policy is part of a national tourism stimulus program aimed at making travel easier and more affordable. With visa-free access, travelers from Europe and beyond can plan spontaneous trips, combine Vietnam with other Southeast Asian countries, or enjoy longer holidays without paperwork hassle.
